Grover’s Bar and Grill is a place known by locals for their very large outstanding tasty burgers, where you write your name on a chalkboard, grab a beer and stand by the bar to wait for your name to be called for a seat. It’s a very popular place so expect a short wait, but believe me, it’s worth the wait.
The building and location is also famously known (and named) for being former Grover Cleveland’s hunting lodge in the late 1800’s in upstate New York. Cleveland was a politician and lawyer who served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States.
I bet this small former cabin now restaurant could tell a lot of great stories, it’s got a very unique location for this very unique restaurant.
To start right off, bring cash. They do not accept credit cards.
The building is small and so it’s cozy and tight inside with a great old school bar/pub atmosphere. There’s a nice old copper covered bar that seats about fifteen and then there are about ten booths and a few scattered tables.
The food fare is really good burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken wings and salads.
Grover’s is especially well known for a very unique and tasty soup that people from miles around go there for. It’s a cheeseburger soup that’s got bits of burgers and it comes with shredded lettuce and tomato just like you would get if you ordered a burger. It’s called a soup but it’s really a liquid cheeseburger. Sounds crazy but it’s unbelievably tasty good! …or as Guy Fieri would say it was “off the hook!”.
I brought up Guy Fieri because he has been to Grover’s and did a Diners Drives in’s and Dives episode there a few years ago.

I tried the cheeseburger soup, garlic parmesan wings and blue cheese covered wings and for an entree had a grilled cheese cheese burger which was two grilled cheese sandwiches with a cheeseburger in between.
The grilled cheese cheese burger was amazing, the flavors of the grilled sourdough bread with the crusty parmesan cheese on the outside and gooey American cheese on the inside with the perfectly cooked quality hamburger was a harmony of flavors that melded together amazingly very well. This was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had, I think I gained about 4 lbs just looking at that burger let alone eating it 🙂
Let me warn you, the burgers are huge and so you should plan accordingly (bring a friend to help if necessary heh).
Everything that I had was outstanding in flavor, preparedness and presentation.
Despite the restaurant being packed at times, the service is outstanding. I was never once left with an empty glass of anything.
Grover’s has great food, a great atmosphere and great service. Two thumbs up, I highly recommend you try Grover’s if you are ever in Amherst New York or around.
